W1 - Topic 1: My experiences of internet New Media so far...

It's amazing how you can blog away but the minute it's work-related then you just don't know what to write. I'm too much of a perfectionist. Let's hope the next one doesn't take as long...!

Communication can be achieved in many different forms. E-mail lists are an easy way, one-way communicative approach of reaching many people, though on a two-way social level e-mails could be seen as out-dated. Facebook and Windows Live Messenger continue to grow in popularity and these are much quicker ways of communicating than the traditional e-mail. I am a personal fan of these options over e-mail for this reason. However in the work-place, e-mail is a great way of instantly communicating with someone while giving them the opportunity to reply in their own time.

I also hold Bulletin Board systems close to my heart. These are far more public than e-mails and offer endless routes of communication to people. While some are simple and small, others have posh designs and a huge community. Through one large community I have met many great people who are now real-life friends following meet-ups. They are a great way to find people who share common interests and communicate with people who you otherwise might not speak to.

Additionally, there are websites which are often one-way communication, sometimes with the option of being able to comment. A user can read the Daily Mail website (for example) and read about the day's events without being forced to react or interact, which is something I often do. It is good to sometimes step back and take information in without feeling the need to comment - with most e-mails, Facebook and such like it is considered rude not to respond.
